A report on the November PPS Meeting

with Helen Khouri at the home of Alan & Mary McAllen

It was a very wet afternoon in Hamilton but a goodly number of polios braved the rain to attend this meeting about wheelchairs.

Helen Khouri talked to us about the importance of understanding how using a wheelchair can conserve our energy, even if we only use it for half the day or on days when our stamina is low.

She laid out the criteria of funding and the requirements that a funded wheelchair is needed to assist in daily living and mobility inside the house and as far as the letter box. Also priority is placed on needing a wheelchair for employment or if the person is a student.

Types of wheelchairs (self propelled or electric etc) were discussed and the usual problem of wheelchairs tearing up the carpet were talked about during the question time.

We related well to Helen and she even got to hand the cups of tea and coffee and lovely Christmas refreshment around. She was one of the few abled bodied and had a steady hand.

Thank you Alan and Mary for hosting this meeting in your lovely home by the Waikato River amongst the wet trees.
